Bloggers: Rock the Red Pump For National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The Red Pump Project

I’ve signed up to Rock the Red Pump and show my support of increasing awareness of how women and girls in the United States are affected by HIV/AIDS and to salute the courage and strength they face each day in dealing with this disease – and I think you should, too.

You can follow them on Twitter at @RedPumpProj and support them on Facebook on The Red Pump Project Facebook Page.

What is The Red Pump Project?

It is a project that was started by Luvvie Ajayi and Karyn Watkins in March 2009 to help raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls as part of a nationwide initiative.

They chose to use the Red Pump as a symbol of empowerment and as an embodiment of the strength and courage of women and girls who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is March 10th every year and as a part of that effort, Rock the Red Pump was launched as a way for bloggers to show their support for women and girls who are affected by HIV/AIDS and represents the strength and courage of these women and girls.

In the first year, 2009, their initial campaign goal was to get 100 blogs to sign up. They had 125. Last year the number of blogs doubled to 250. This year the goal is to double that to 500 in 50 days and they exceeded that by getting 650 in 25 days.

UPDATED: Teaching Understanding Google Analytics

mediabistro

I am thrilled to be teaching Understanding Google Analytics, an online course, for mediabistro.

The first classes begin July 29th. That course is ending soon, but you can now sign up for the next session that will begin on Thursday evenings beginning October 7th. Sign up here.

Here’s the course description:

Business owners used to only be concerned with the number of hits to their website. Now businesses, bloggers, and online marketers need to know more than just how many people are coming to their site. They need data about their site’s performance, Internet marketing investments, lead or sales conversions, visitor behavior, and user interaction. Fortunately, the advancement of web technologies has made this comprehensive collection of data and analysis possible.

1GOAL: Education For All Kicks Off

Perhaps the most exciting part of the World Cup (for me, at least…) is the official launch of the 1GOAL campaign. Learn more about the campaign to educate all and get involved here:

1GOAL is a campaign seizing the power of football to ensure that education for all is a lasting impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. By bringing together footballers and fans, charities and organisations around the world, together we can call on world leaders to make education a reality for 72 million children by 2015.

Live Podcast: Featured Guest Kara Swisher, AllThingsD

Kara Swisher

Kara Swisher

Funny coincidences happen all the time, and it just so happens that one of them reminded me that Kara Swisher needed to be on The A-List.

I was watching CNN or BBC World News from my hotel room in Paris after the first day of the LeWeb conference. Lo and behold, I heard for the first time that AOL and Time Warner had split – big news in the Internet world. It was the first I’d heard of it after a full day at an Internet conference, so I couldn’t wait to get the details.

They told the basic story, then went to the prominent expert on the topic of the merger and uncomfortable pairing, authoring two books on the topic.

That expert? Kara Swisher.

As you probably know, Kara Swisher is Co-Executive Editor of AllThingsD and has followed the space for the better part of her distinguished career. Listen to the archive:

Live Podcast: Featured Guest Ryan Calo, Academic Fellow, Center for Internet and Society at Stanford University

Ryan Calo

Ryan Calo

I was lucky enough to meet the brilliant Ryan Calo at a Social Media Club event I took part in. We might have been trying to get Lawrence Lessig on our panel, but we got more than we could have hoped for from Lessing himself.

Ryan is an Academic Fellow, Center for Internet and Society at Stanford University, and spends time researching and sharing findings on the intersection of the law and technology, including the social web.

An in-demand speaker who’s been a featured expert  on many broadcast programs , including CNN, I am thrilled to welcome him to The A-List! Listen to the archive here:

Blog Action Day 2009: How Semantics Might Save the Planet

bad-300-250When I signed up to take part in Blog Action Day 2009, I thought, surely by the time I wrote the post, I would have something insightful to share about climate change. A personal story. A moment of enlightenment. A freakin’ antidote!

But in time I could research climate change and draw from my own experiences, I found that the most compelling challenge might simply be that others in this world don’t recognize what ‘climate change’ is.

It’s all semantics.

Pressure To Make An ‘Under 40′ List

fortyUnder40_09I don’t know if  it’s the Ivy League over-achiever in me or if I’m simply more competitive by nature than I realize, but I feel strangely panicky about having not made a 40 under 40 as yet.

It’s not as though I’ve achieved nothing; I earned the two Emmy noms under my belt… but recognition is important on a number of levels. As I get older, I find the need to be singled-out for achievement grows with one’s accomplishments.
