Email For The Generations Presentation At #SMMSF

Nielsen and comScore tell us from their stats that advertisers look at all of us through a generational lens.

Coming from more than a decade in the television industry – both on-air and digital – I have long been taught to use information we know about what appeals to members of each of the four living generation in the US.

I have brought those learnings to my work as a consultant, despite a lack of dialogue about this approach in social media and general marketing circles.

That changed when I presented Email For The Generations: Social tactics to trigger responses from the Greatest Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials effectively.

Take a look at my presentation, available for download on Slideshare, and let me know what you think!

Global Ignite Week Streaming Live

Global Ignite WeekI have the honor and pleasure to be speaking at the first-ever Global Ignite Week.

If you’ve never been to an Ignite, you must. Each presenter has 5 minutes and 20 slides to get a point across. Because of the compressed nature of the talks, you never really know what to expect, which is the best part about it, really.

Usually local events, such as the launch of Bay Area Ignite back in December 2009, this is part of Ignites happening all over the world.

There are almost 40 Ignites scheduled from March 1st through the 4th and you’ll be able to watch them streaming online every day.

So far, Global Ignite Week is represented on 4 continents and 10 countries. Our goal is to have participation from all 7 continents (Nairobi is looking good, and we’re working on Antarctica). More on this from Ignite founder, Brady Forrest.

Networking For Business Using Social Networks: Top 20 Dos and Don’ts

Source: NetworkingWave.com

Source: NetworkingWave.com

I recently gave a talk for CoreNet Global young leaders and – while interested in strategy – what people really wanted to know was how to virtually network. How to keep personal from professional and vice versa.

As just about every person I know immersed in social media as I am will tell you, after a certain critical mass of connections, it’s probably silly to try and keep these things orderly (read: separate).

However, I can appreciate the need to do so, especially as you’re getting your feet wet or certain business (or personal?) relationships represent a conflict of interest.

Well, if you think of the analogy of social networking being like a cocktail party, at a bare minimum, anyone can know you’re there. You don’t really want to draw attention by avoiding conversation

That said, here are my top 20 dos and don’ts when it comes to social networking for business:

Dr. Social Media

It struck me last night…

I was giving a presentation to CoreNet Northern California young leaders and as the audience asked questions and became more engaged, it hit me.

I was handing out (verbal) prescriptions.

I wouldn’t call it advice – strategy at its best ties far too directly to one’s business goals and objectives – it was something far more serious.

Prescribing social media as a sort of medicine to help companies excel in this economy is a serious business. A I treat it so.

I’ve Left Eastwick!

I have received so many lovely notes and ‘!’ ‘ ?’ symbols since posting to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn that I want to confirm that I have, indeed, left Eastwick Communications. I wish them well.

Now that I have moved on, I am more than excited by the response. Bless you for your kind words and well wishes :) I am floored by the amazing recommendations of my work on LinkedIn. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

To answer the “big” question… Yes, I am opening shop as a consultant, perhaps more. I am working on defining my services now, as I am taking opportunities on… please be in touch if you are interested in engaging!

I am speaking tonight at a young leaders event for CoreNet Global this evening in San Francisco. I will continue with these engagements as opportunities permit – please let me know if I can help your organization understand a particular aspect of social media! I am committed as ever to helping people and organizations understand the power and promise of social media.
